Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute di Venezia

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is located in Venice, at the entrance to the Grand Canal, and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. It was built between 1631 and 1687 to celebrate the end of the plague that had struck the city. The project was entrusted to architect Baldassare Longhena, who designed the church with an octagonal plan and a large central dome. The basilica is an example of Baroque architecture, with interior decorations rich in frescoes and artworks. Inside, masterpieces by artists such as Giovanni Bellini and Titian can be found. The façade features columns and statues, giving it a majestic appearance. Every year, on November 21st, the Venetians celebrate the feast of the Madonna della Salute with a procession across the Grand Canal. The basilica is also an important pilgrimage site and a symbol of popular devotion.
