EMERGENCY “THE WAR AT HOME”

On the day of its 25^th anniversary, EMERGENCY launches “Zakhem | Ferite | Wounds. La Guerra a casa | When war comes home”, a photo exhibition curated by Giulio Piscitelli, in collaboration with EMERGENCY, supported by Contrasto. The exposition opened on May 15^th at Casa EMERGENCY (Via Santa Croce 19, Milano), right on the day of the organization’s anniversary.

EMERGENCY started its involvement in Afghanistan in 1999, and ever since it helped over 6 million people. On those grounds, the heritage of previous wars is still present: landmines and unused IEDs keep mutilating children and adults, for the most part civilians. Giulio Piscitelli  met personally the victims of a war that has kept going for more than 18 years, never questioned by public opinion.

It gave them a name, it uncovered their stories. Stories that speak of a violence that busts through everyday life, with no warning. Stories that describe a wound – kazhem, in dari – war has inflicted. These wounds are the core of this photographic tale, because that is where war begins.
